The three-year study, called Project Veronica, investigated how the black boxes would work.
Called ‘event data recorders’, the boxes can monitor up to 20 pieces of telemetry – including the car’s speed, braking force and driver inputs.
The study found that drivers of cars fitted with the data recorders were 10 per cent less likely to be involved in a fatal accident, and repair bills after a crash were reduced by about 25 per cent on average.
Furthermore, according to the study, police and insurance companies would be able to use the data to accurately discover what happened, and assign blame after an accident.
Many vehicles in the UK, such as lorries and emergency response vehicles, are already fitted with data recorders and two-thirds of new cars are fitted with the recording technology in the US.
